Red Orphingtons this week
This is the bird you want in your flock if you’re a beginner. Orpingtons are known for their sweet-tempered, docile nature. They’re a sizable and curvy bird with loose, fluffy feathering which makes them seem even larger. Red Orpingtons are a solid rust color. Orpingtons tend to be very friendly and have a pet-like demeanor. They are a productive layer of medium-large brown eggs.
I'm always amazed at the different colors of Orphingtons. Such a sweet friendly bird that lays lots of eggs and makes the perfect addition to your backyard flock. I love their fluff soft feathers and look at these REDS!

Lavender Orphington: Our Uniquely Rare Bird this week!
Meet the Lavender Orphington,
They are a large fluffy, friendly hen – have a profusion of feathers which makes them seem much larger than they actually are.
They are known to be curious, docile, cuddly and quite smart, which makes them adorable!
As they are so calm and quiet they are often lower in the pecking order than the more assertive ladies of your flock. They do get picked on by other hens, so be aware of this and deal with it as needed.
They are said to be good foragers although they are more likely to hang out near the feeders – being a bit on the lazy side.
As with all Orpingtons the Lavender should appear as a heavy, broad bodied bird standing low to the ground. The back should be short and curvy. The tail is a bit on the short side. Although they are a large bird it is quite compact in its physique. A mature rooster will weigh in around 10lb with a mature hen weighing 8lb or so.
If you’re a free-range fanatic and love to let your birds roam free the lavender sits in the middle of the pack. They love to forage, and won’t go hungry when they have plenty of vegetation, bugs, and grubs to devour. But they are a tad clueless when it comes to keeping an eye out for predators.
Lavenders are extremely friendly, in most cases, and will choose to spend time near you while you are out doing the chores. If you’re looking for a friendly companion free-ranger, the Lavender is a great choice (especially because the roosters do not tend to be aggressive).
As with most Orpingtons, they are a fairly steady layer. They should produce around 170-200 light brown, medium sized eggs per year.
Since Orpingtons are known to be broody, you can expect them to go broody about once a year. They make wonderful mothers, so if you have any eggs that need hatching, slip them under your Orpington!
High temperatures and heat can be a problem for Orpingtons because of their dense feathering. They need shade, cool water and dust bath areas readily available to help cool them down. Another problem with excessive sunlight is that it will make the Lavender color fade a little into tan/yellow overtones in mature birds.
The Lavender Orphingtons coming in this week are pullets, $12.00 each. Call or come in to Pre-Pay for your chicks to assure you will get them, they will be put on hold for you for 24 hours. We ordered extra because these birds are very popular. Order should come in on Thursday.
We also have our rare chicks ($4.75) Barnvelders and Speckled Sussex

Our Uniquely Rare bird this week The Chocolate Orphington
Chocolate
Orpingtons are such dark brown
they almost appear black. Orpingtons tend to be very friendly and have a
pet-like demeanor, they are a productive layer of medium-large brown eggs.
Chocolate Orpingtons, just like any other color, are curvy birds that often go
broody. Our Chocolate Orpingtons are smaller than the standard size, often
called ‘Fun-Sized’.
The deep, rich beautiful color of the Chocolate Orpington is a
must for your new flock! These gorgeous, birds stand out among all the birds
making them an eye catcher to any poultry enthusiast.
Chocolate Orpingtons are fair egg layers, laying between 120-150 eggs per year and hens are often known to go broody.

STARTING OFF RIGHT WITH BABY CHICKS
Are you a new chick owner? This is for you. Chicks thrive in ideal conditions, so consider these tips for getting started: Please keep chicks inside or in an enclosed area to protect against predators.
- Heat: Suspend a warm bulb about a foot above the brooder floor for warmth – and have a second bulb on hand in case one burns out. Keep temps in the brooder about 90-95 degrees F for the first week, decreasing about 5 degrees per week. Raise the light as chicks grow. Be sure chicks can move away from the light if they become too warm.
- Environment: Be sure your brooder is big enough so your chicks can move about comfortably. Keep it out of drafts. Stock tanks, plastic tubs and homemade brooders are a few good options. Do not allow the brooder to become wet or damp. Use wire mesh or light grating to cover top to prevent pets or children from getting in and keep chicks from getting out. Never close up the top, they need ventilation and fresh air.
- Bedding: Pine wood shavings are ideal, large flake is best. Avoid straw, hay and newspaper as these become slippery for chicks and trap moisture. Clean bedding daily.
- Water: Be sure clean, fresh water is always available. Dip chick beaks into water and let them drink before introducing feed. Elevating the waterer on a wooden block a couple inches off the floor will help it stay clean and prevent bedding from contaminating it.
- Feed: Place feeder on a block of wood to elevate above the brooder floor and shavings. Have chick starter feed available 24/7. Your chicks will eat just what they need. We recommend Purina Medicated Start N Grow, this feed has an additive that prevents Coccidia.
